This video is a based on a Traditional (Untraditional) Apple Crisp ! With Fall in the air it is time to take full advantage of this time of year and encouraging a full "Farm to Table" experience with a fieldtrip to an apple orchard!!!! My culinary class is currently discussing and learning about sustainable food systems! it is a great way to demonstrate the process of buying/shopping local: Corn stands, apple orchards, farmer's markets, pumpkin patches to name the main midwestern outdoor attractions. In efforts to create hands-on learning in an online educational setting I have been striving to do personalized cooking lab demonstrations to connect more on a personal note. I add information along the process to suggest substitutions of personal preference and/or also to think about any food sensitivities/allergies if they may make and want to share with others. I can not require any of my students to complete the labs but do ask/expect and assign lab reflections for them to complete to show they are acquiring the knowledge, skills and awareness they would/should be gaining in a traditional brick and mortar school setting. All this in hope I may get the students to take the extra step to complete the weekly lab recipe options to also get the practice of the life skill of preparing food safely. Enjoying the process of being creative and problem solving in their own kitchens. Learning how to make food with love and hopefully even share with others: which makes everything taste better! In our online educational setting I do not have any budget/reimbursement for my classes nor my lab demonstration ingredients/materials which come out of my personal kitchen supplies or expense. Being an outside of the box type of person makes me want others to learn and want to spend more time in the kitchen creating homemade foods to enjoy. Learning simple items made at home can be more enjoyable, cheaper and most times healthier as well.
