56 countries belong to the Commonwealth, and four of them were never British. How did an empire turn into a club that nations still choose to join? The Commonwealth of Nations runs from Lord Rosebery's phrase in Adelaide in 1884 to the CHOGM in St. John's in November 2026. This documentary follows it from start to finish through archive film, archive photographs and period documents. The film starts with three questions. How did the word Commonwealth replace the word Empire without a war? Why did dropping the single word British save the whole idea in 1949? And how does a club built from a lost empire keep gaining members it never colonised, such as Mozambique, Rwanda, Gabon and Togo? The story passes through the Colonial Conference of 1887, Jan Smuts in 1917, the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, the Balfour Declaration of 15 November 1926 and the Statute of Westminster of 11 December 1931. In the London Declaration of April 1949 the word British disappears. India becomes a republic in January 1950 and stays in. Under Queen Elizabeth II the association gains a Secretariat in 1965 under Arnold Smith. Later come the Singapore and Gleneagles meetings, the Harare Declaration of 1991, suspensions of Nigeria, Pakistan and Zimbabwe, the Charter of the Commonwealth in 2013, and Charles III as Head.
