Today's breakfast menu: Beetroot Breakfast Bites with Roasted Seed Powder + Naturally Sweet Dry Fruit Smoothie.
1. Beetroot Idli Bites with Seed Topping
Prep time: 10 minutes · Cooking time: 7 minutes · Serves: Family breakfast
Ingredients
100 g beetroot
Idli batter, as required
10 g pumpkin seeds
10 g watermelon seeds
10 g sunflower seeds
A little ghee for roasting
Method
Step 1: Prepare the beetroot paste
Peel and chop 100 g of beetroot. Grind it into a smooth paste, adding a little water only if necessary.
Step 2: Mix with idli batter
Add the beetroot paste to your regular idli batter and mix well until the batter turns a beautiful pinkish-red colour.
Step 3: Steam the idlis
Pour the batter into greased idli moulds and steam for approximately 7 minutes, or until fully cooked. Allow them to cool slightly.
Step 4: Prepare the seed powder
Dry-roast 10 g each of pumpkin seeds, watermelon seeds and sunflower seeds. Let them cool and grind into a coarse powder.
Step 5: Make the breakfast bites
Cut the cooked idlis into small cubes, like paneer. Heat a little ghee in a pan and lightly roast the cubes. Sprinkle the prepared seed powder over them and toss gently.
Serving idea: Serve the colourful cubes in a bowl and call them Beetroot Breakfast Bites instead of idli. A fun name and a different presentation may encourage children to try them!
2. Naturally Sweet Dry Fruit Smoothie
Prep time: 10 minutes soaking · Serves: Approximately 2–3, depending on glass size
Ingredients
5 small elaichi bananas
6 figs
6 dates
20 g cashews
25 g raisins (kismis)
Milk, as required
Ice cubes, optional
Honey, optional
Method
Step 1: Soak the dry fruits
Place the figs, dates, cashews and raisins in hot water for about 10 minutes to soften them. Drain the water.
Step 2: Add the ingredients
Peel the bananas and add them to a mixer grinder along with the soaked dry fruits and nuts.
Step 3: Blend until smooth
Add milk according to your preferred consistency. Blend everything until creamy and smooth.
Step 4: Serve chilled
Pour into glasses. Add a few ice cubes if desired. Taste before adding honey, as the bananas, dates and raisins already provide natural sweetness.
Why this breakfast is a smart idea
Beetroot: Adds colour, fibre and nutrients to a familiar breakfast.
Idli: Provides carbohydrates for energy.
Mixed seeds: Add healthy fats, protein and minerals.
Banana and dry fruits: Contribute natural sweetness, fibre and energy.
Milk and cashews: Add protein, fat and other nutrients.
A small note for parents: this smoothie can be quite filling and naturally high in sugars from the fruit and dry fruits. Serve an age-appropriate portion, and remember that whole fruit and a varied diet are valuable too. Check for nut or seed allergies, and avoid serving whole nuts or seeds to young children who may choke on them.
