Welcome to the channel The Old West Theatre. New Mexico, 1881. William Bonney has been dead for a matter of weeks — shot by Pat Garrett at Fort Sumner — and the frontier is still making up its mind about what to do with the legend while the grave is still fresh. Three drifting cowhands are on their way to Montana: John T. Coleman, a dreamer who keeps a running tally of everything a man needs to start a ranch from scratch; B.D. Sweetman, the senior hand, measured and experienced; and July, who has been riding alongside the other two long enough to know when John T. is about to do something inadvisable. On a dusty road they meet Virgilio Segura — a Mexican bandit with the easy manner of a man who has survived too much to be nervous about anything — who has a fine mustang he is willing to part with for the right price. Virgilio rode with Billy the Kid. The mustang, he mentions as the transaction concludes, was the Kid's own horse. The three cowhands name the animal and ride on. What happens next is not entirely easy to explain. The dream of Montana fades. The steady paycheck stops seeming like enough. They rob a bank. They kill two posse members getting away. They find themselves, somewhere between the saguaros and the red rock country, on the owl-hoot trail with wanted paper behind them and a silver wagon somewhere ahead that is beginning to look like the answer to all their problems. Along the way they help a wagon train that needs them. None of it is entirely bad. None of it is entirely explicable.
