Nature Centric: To fix our planet, we have to fix ourselves

We are not separate from nature - we ARE nature. Harming nature is an act of self-harm - and caring for nature is an act of self-care. These are the ideas at the heart of NATURE CENTRIC, a documentary presented by Professor Tom Oliver of Reading University, author of The Nature Delusion. What if the environmental crisis is a actually a crisis in the way we think? For centuries, humans have increasingly placed themselves above and apart from the natural world: seeing nature as resource, backdrop, property or waste-disposal system. Tom argues that this separation is an illusion — and that the belief in human exceptionalism has helped lead us directly into today’s ecological crisis. Travelling from the polluted waters of the Thames to ancient landscapes, community nature projects and an Oxfordshire farm transformed by tragedy, Tom explores a radically different way of seeing our place in the world. Modern biology and neuroscience increasingly reveal just how deeply entangled we are with the living systems around us: our bodies, minds, food, water and wellbeing are all part of a vast web of interdependence. Tom meets artists, scientists, farmers and campaigners who are beginning to put that understanding into practice — including those fighting to give nature a voice and rights of its own.
