Why did Melkor, the most powerful of the Valar, fear Varda above all others? In this video, I explore the complex relationship between Melkor and Varda, the Lady of the Stars. From his desire for the Silmarils to his hatred of light, I examine how Tolkien presents their opposing natures: one seeking to dominate and possess beauty, and the other seeking to illuminate and preserve it.
