The full Ganesha story: Vyasa dictates, Ganesha writes, the condition that neither may stop, the broken pen, and the name Ekadanta. This is a story of devotion, not a fixed historical date. The first Sanskrit printings: Miraj, 1805, and Calcutta, 1808. Wilkins in 1785 was an English translation, not the Sanskrit text. Schlegel’s Bonn edition is 1823. How old are the 700 verses? No copy from the day of composition survives. Shankara, about the eighth century, already counts seven hundred. The Bhandarkar critical edition keeps seven hundred. Historians place the composition somewhere between the 4th century BCE and the 2nd century CE, and they do not agree on one year. Krishna’s teaching has not started. That begins in Chapter 2.
