March 1, 1896.
An Italian colonial army entered the Ethiopian highlands expecting to defeat an African empire.
Instead, it encountered Emperor Menelik II, Empress Taytu Betul, thousands of Ethiopian soldiers, difficult mountain terrain, and a military campaign that would end in one of the most significant defeats suffered by a European colonial power in Africa.
This is the story of the Battle of Adwa.
But Adwa did not begin on the battlefield.
It began with a treaty.
The Treaty of Wuchale was supposed to establish relations between Ethiopia and Italy. Instead, differences between its Italian and Amharic versions helped create a diplomatic crisis over whether Ethiopia had accepted Italian protection.
By 1895, diplomacy had given way to war.
Italian forces advanced into Tigray. Ethiopian forces mobilized under Menelik II and powerful regional commanders. Then, on March 1, 1896, the two armies met near Adwa.
What followed would change the course of Ethiopian and African history.
In this documentary, we explore:
• Who was Emperor Menelik II?
• What happened with the Treaty of Wuchale?
• Why did Italy invade Ethiopia?
• How did Ethiopia mobilize for war?
• What happened during the Battle of Adwa?
• What role did geography and military coordination play?
• What happened after the Ethiopian victory?
• How did Menelik's empire expand beyond Adwa?
• Why does Adwa remain an important symbol in African history?
But the story is more complicated than a simple victory.
Menelik II resisted European colonial expansion while simultaneously expanding the Ethiopian Empire into territories inhabited by many different peoples. Those experiences included political agreements, warfare, imperial administration, land redistribution, tribute, and forced labor.
Understanding Adwa means understanding all of these realities.
