It's almost pure quartz, ground down over millions of years, so fine it feels like powdered sugar and never gets hot under the Florida sun. In 1987, it beat out thirty other beaches to be crowned the World's Finest, Whitest Sand on Earth — and in 2025, it was ranked the best beach in the entire United States. But starting in 2017, an MTV reality show turned this quiet barrier island into a national punchline, dragging its name through boat-party scandals and viral outrage. Longtime residents watched small, one-story cottages get replaced by towering new construction, and watched traffic back up for miles on the only two roads leading onto the island. Then, in 2024, Hurricanes Helene and Milton tore through the same stretch of coastline back to back, flooding Siesta Key Village and damaging homes across the island.
