Two ingredients that never show up in the finished film the way a binder or pigment does, and that's exactly why they're the easiest to underestimate. Solvent's whole job is to leave. Additives go in at well under one percent. Get either one wrong and the failure lands right where you can't hide it: the dried film in front of a customer.
The first half covers solvents: why evaporation rate drives film quality, why formulators blend fast, medium, and slow solvents instead of using one, what changes when water is the solvent, VOC in plain language, and flash point, the one solvent number you never ignore. The second half covers additives: the main categories (dispersants, defoamers, rheology modifiers, biocides, UV stabilizers, driers), the golden rule of dosing, and why fixing one defect with "more" of something often creates a new one.
Two worked troubleshooting examples, orange peel and pinholes, show the same habit from the last two episodes: raw material, formulation, application, and process are separate suspects. Check all of them before you point at one.
This is Episode 12 of the Coatings Industry Training Series, based on Book Two: Raw Materials for Beginners.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
• Solvent choice controls how a coating applies, dries, and looks. Too fast and the film can't level or traps solvent. Too slow and you get long dry times, dirt pickup, and sags.
• Formulators blend solvents so fast ones set the film up early and slow ones stay long enough for flow and leveling.
• Water takes much more energy to evaporate than most organic solvents, which is why waterborne coatings are more sensitive to temperature and humidity. Latex particles also have to coalesce to form a film.
• VOC is measured in grams per liter and is one of the most heavily regulated numbers in the industry. It shapes which solvents, and sometimes which binders, are even on the table.
• Flash point is a safety number. It drives storage, electrical classification, shipping, and mixing precautions.
• Orange peel: check the solvent blend, application conditions, equipment and technique, and application viscosity.
• Most additives go in at well under 1%. A little does the job; a little too much creates new problems.
• Treat additives as a balanced package, not a shopping list. More defoamer can kill foam and create a flow defect.
• Pinholes: check defoamer dosage, film thickness, substrate porosity (outgassing), and mixing procedure.
WHO THIS IS FOR
New lab techs, batch makers, QC and production staff, purchasing and sales people who talk raw materials with suppliers, and anyone in coatings without a chemistry degree.
WHAT'S NEXT
Episode 13 wraps up Book Two: putting all five ingredient categories together into complete formulas, plus the checklist to run every time a new raw material shows up at your dock.
📘 This series is based on the Coatings Industry Training Series books, available on Amazon KDP. This episode is built on Book Two: Raw Materials for Beginners. Book Five goes much deeper into additives.
