The Hurt Syndicate is getting their wake-up call in AEW
PAUL MOONEY
Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin and MVP started out hot in AEW. They got over immediately. Every time they were on TV they came off as both the hottest and coolest thing in the company by a country mile. They looked like stars. They dressed like stars. “We Hurt People” became a battlecry. They had success in the tag team division as former champions with that tag title glow: Look at you go.
The Hurt Syndicate was destined to recreate the main event success they had in WWE, where Bobby Lashley was a whole WWE champion. In their first six months in Jacksonville, the Hurt Syndicate was the real-life version of this two-headed dragon meme of talent that thrived in both WWE and AEW. There was nothing stopping them. Except their size and skin color, because at the end of the day, this is AEW. For lack of a better term, this is a little whiteboy territory.
And The Hurt Syndicate got their AEW wake-up call.
WAKE UP NINJA
As quickly as The Hurt Syndicate got over, they got buried. No more pay-per-view matches for you. Instead they were on the pre-show of AEW’s biggest PPV of the year mobbing around with the Costco Family, where serious stables go to die. No more title shots, instead, they’ve been banished to Collision where they only work for hire, not for championships. No more podcast views. Instead, MVP was recently on his own podcast complaining about how nobody watches anymore.

The Hurt Syndicate’s fall from grace is a shining example of how AEW’s brand is catered to a certain type of wrestler, while alienating the prototypes that they don’t want featured, even if they get over to the degree of the Hurt Syndicate. And today, we’re gonna talk about how and why the Hurt Syndicate fell from grace, and the one controversial comment from MVP that led to their excruciating downfall.
