The Rock Band The MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE PERFORMS AT COORFIELDS, DENVER. The band My Chemical Romance was formed in New Jersey in September 2001 by lead vocalist Gerard Way and drummer Matt Pelissier; the band was heavily influenced by the events of September 11. The 9/11 attacks served as a catalyst: at the time, Gerard Way was an aspiring comic book artist and cartoonist who witnessed the collapse of the World Trade Center towers firsthand. This tragedy deeply affected him, completely altering his outlook on life and driving him to "make a difference" rather than simply dreaming about making music. He wrote the band's first song, "Skylines and Turnstiles," as a way to confront and process the psychological shock and horror of the event.
