He was the son of Bhai Kehar Singh and Bibi Ratan Kaur. His father was serving in the Indian army as a havildar (sergeant) and he was born at a cantonment station. His mother when he was a bare three weeks old, and he was brought up by his grandmother. His father originally belonged to Jarg village, Dist. Ludhiana then in the princely state of Patiala, but some time after his retirement in 1908 he migrated to Chakk No. 85 Dalla Chanda Singh in a newly developed canal district. When on 19 February 1921, Bhai Kehar Singh (his father) prepared to join the Jatha or batch of Akali volunteers bound for Nankana Sahib, Darbara Singh, too, much against the wishes of his father as well as against the entreaties of his old grandmother, joined it. Both father and son were hacked to pieces the following morning in the enclosed compound of Gurdwara Janam Asthan. In Punjabi; ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਕਾਕਾ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਕਾਕਾ (ਭਾਈ) ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਨਕਾਣਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਮਜ਼ਲੂਮ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕੇਹਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਬੀ ਰਤਨ ਕੌਰ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਤਿੰਨ ਹਫਤੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਜੀ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਰੱਬ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਉਸਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਕੇਹਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਦੂਜੀ ਸ਼ਾਦੀ ਨਾ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਪਾਲਣ-ਪੋਸ਼ਣ ਉਸਦੀ ਦਾਦੀ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ। ਜਦੋਂ ਕਾਕਾ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਜੱਥੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਪਤਾ ਲਗਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੱਥੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਜਿਦ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਸ ਸਮੇ ਪਿਹਲਾਂ ਜੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਨਿਹੱਥਿਆਂ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ ਤੇ ਨਰੈਣੂ ਮਹੰਤ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਪੱਖ ਵੀ ਮਹੰਤ ਵੱਲ ਸੀ। 9 ਸਾਲ ਦਾ ਬੱਚਾ ਜਿੱਦ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਥੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਏਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਇਸਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਹਾਦਤ ਦਾ ਜਾਮ ਪੀਏਗਾ। ਬੱਚੇ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਣ ਲਈ ਸਭ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਈਆਂ। ਉਸਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਦਾਦੀ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕਾਫੀ ਰੋਕਿਆ-ਟੋਕਿਆ ਪਰ ਉਹ ਨਾ ਮਾਨਿਆ। ਦਾਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਂ ਵੱਜੋਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਨਾ ਸਕਿਆ, ਇਕੱਲਾ ਤੇ ਛੋਟਾ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਖਤੀ ਵੀ ਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕੀ। ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਜਜ੍ਬਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕੁੱਟ-ਕੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਭਰੀਆ ਹੋਈਆ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਬੱਚੇ ਨੂੰ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ, ਨੇਜਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਗੰਡਾਸਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਵੀ ਰੋਕ ਨਾ ਸਕਿਆ।
