Fat Bear Week 2026 (Sept 22-29) is the 12th annual showdown at Brooks River in Katmai National Park & Preserve, where 16 brown bears compete for the glorious title of fattest bear. Last year more than 1.7 million votes poured in from over 100 countries. This year the defending champ Chunk (Bear 32) was dethroned in round one by Bucky Dent (Bear 164). BACKPACK, BEAR 89, IS THE 2026 CHAMPION! In the final, Backpack beat Bear 910 (the Dancing Queen), 103,344 votes to 98,253. Backpack is the son of 2019 champion Holly — the cub who once rode on his mother's back is now the fattest bear of twenty twenty six. Voting for 2026 has closed — Bear 89 Backpack is the champion.
