On Look for the Helpers, a podcast by Engage Therapy in Agoura Hills, Dr. Blake Brisbois sits down with Dr. Chris Tolcher, a general pediatrician who has cared for Conejo Valley families for nearly thirty years. Fifteen months ago he opened his own practice, Parkway Pediatrics in Calabasas, with Dr. Bethany Stafford, and he serves as co-chair of the Quality & Care Transformation Committee for the CHLA Care Network. When your kid is sick, you go to the pediatrician, and you bring your fear with you. Tolcher calls himself a scientist at heart, and he loves the tools; he uses the newest clinical-evidence apps every day. But the throughline of this conversation is what the tools can't do. He remembers his first lost patient, a two-year-old, a month into the job, and crying alone in the hallway. He describes the hardest thing to learn in the work: how to care deeply without being emotionally leveled by the bad days. And he offers what may be the whole episode in one line, that the most important instrument in medicine is the stool, something to sit on so you can listen, take a history, and tell a parent, "you're the expert on your child." It's a conversation about competence and humility living in the same room: know the science cold, and still have the courage to sit down and feel it.
