In this project, we built a simple bionic hand that can detect and mimic hand gestures.
The goal wasn’t to recreate the human hand perfectly, but to build a simple robotic version that uses the same basic idea: joints, tendons, and actuators working together to create movement.
The hand uses 5 servo motors, one for each finger. Fishing line works as the tendons, while rubber bands pull the fingers back to their original position when the servos release them.
We designed the supporting parts around a roughly realistic 3D scan of a human hand, then built the mechanism around it. This includes the finger guides, wrist structure, forearm structure, custom servo mounts, and the servo heads that pull the fishing lines.
For the electronics, we used a Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32-S3, a PCA9685 servo driver, five MG90S servos, two 18650 batteries, and step-down converters for the different voltage levels.
Once everything was assembled, we first wrote a small test program with the help of Claude to test each finger individually and calibrate all the servos. After that, we worked on the main control code, with a bit of back and forth to get everything working properly.
Finally, we connected the hand to a gesture-tracking system and started testing different movements to see how well the robotic hand could follow a real human hand.
Of course, this hand is still very simple compared to an actual human hand. It doesn’t have tactile sensing, force feedback, or the same level of precision and freedom of movement. But it gives us a basic platform that we can keep improving in the future with more degrees of freedom, better control, force sensors, tactile sensors, and more advanced mechanisms.
So this is really just the first step toward building more capable and dexterous robotic hands for humanoid robots.

🎨 3D Printing
We printed all the parts for this project ourselves, but you don't necessarily need your own 3D printer.
If you don't have a printer or don't want to deal with printing everything yourself, you can use JLC3DP to have your parts manufactured.
