How should parents and clinicians talk about sexuality, puberty, consent, and self-exploration with autistic children and young adults? In this episode of *Acorns to Oaks*, Kristine Dixon and Sarah Marino discuss a subject many families and clinicians understandably find difficult to navigate: sexual health and developmental disabilities. Physical development doesn't necessarily follow the same timeline as communication, social, or other developmental skills. Puberty still happens. Hormones change. Children may discover self-exploration. And as autistic children grow into teens and adults, understanding privacy, consent, appropriate touch, relationships, and body autonomy can become an important part of keeping them safe. Kristine and Sarah discuss: • How to respond to early self-exploration • Teaching private vs. public behavior • Why family culture and religious values matter • Using accurate language for body parts • Puberty and changing bodies • Teaching consent and body autonomy • Sexual health and abuse prevention • Helping teens and young adults understand safe relationships • Why avoiding the conversation can unintentionally create shame • How parents and clinicians can keep these conversations open and ongoing One of the central ideas of this conversation is simple: not talking about sexuality doesn't mean a child won't encounter it. Peers, television, movies, the internet, and their own physical development will all provide information. Open, age-appropriate communication gives parents and caregivers an opportunity to provide accurate information within their own family's values — while building the safety and self-advocacy skills their child may need throughout life. Sexual health is part of physical health, mental health, independence, and safety. 🌱 Acorns to Oaks is presented by Nurture & Nature Applied Behavior Analysis.
