🔥 BATHURST 1986-1992 | BROCK'S LAST WIN, GODZILLA ARRIVES & 1992 ERUPTS IN CONTROVERSY!
Our journey through Australia's Great Race continues with 1986 to 1992, an extraordinary period when international Group A racing transformed Mount Panorama.
These were the years of turbocharged Ford Sierras, Holden Commodores, BMWs, Toyotas and Nissans, before the arrival of the Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R, better known as "Godzilla."
In 1986, Allan Grice and Graeme Bailey delivered a famous privateer victory in the Chickadee Holden VK Commodore.
Then came 1987 and Peter Brock's ninth and final Bathurst victory. Brock, David Parsons and Peter McLeod originally finished third in their Mobil VL Commodore, but the two Eggenberger Ford Sierras ahead were later disqualified, handing Brock one final Bathurst triumph.
Tony Longhurst and Tomas Mezera won in a Ford Sierra RS500 in 1988, before Dick Johnson and John Bowe dominated in 1989, leading all 161 laps in their Shell Sierra.
In 1990, Win Percy and Allan Grice struck back for Holden, taking the first Bathurst victory for the newly formed Holden Racing Team in the VL Commodore SS Group A SV.
Then GODZILLA arrived.
By 1991, the Gibson Motorsport Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R had become the benchmark. Jim Richards and Mark Skaife dominated Bathurst, winning by a full lap and giving a Japanese car its first outright victory in the Great Race.
And then came 1992.
For many who watched it at the time, it remains one of the most unforgettable finishes in Bathurst history.
Ford versus Holden tribalism was enormous. Supporters picked a side and stayed loyal. Then along came a twin-turbo, four-wheel-drive Nissan that was beating both of them. Many Ford and Holden fans had grown frustrated with the Skyline's success, and the atmosphere was already charged.
Late in the race, torrential rain turned Mount Panorama into chaos. Cars crashed across the circuit and Richards, who had been leading in the Winfield Nissan, also crashed in the appalling conditions.
The race was red flagged.
Dick Johnson and John Bowe's Ford Sierra was still circulating, and many spectators believed that meant the Ford had won. But the rules worked differently. The result was determined by countback to the previous completed lap, where Richards and Skaife were leading, so they were correctly declared the winners.
Skaife summed it up on the podium:
"We led the race all day ... that's the way it is."
The frustration below the podium quickly became ugly. Booing, angry chants and beer cans were directed at the winners as the emotion and tribal rivalry of Bathurst spilled over.
Richards and Skaife were initially restrained. Skaife later recalled being angry enough to collect beer cans to throw back, but Richards stopped him. Moments later, after facing the hostile reception himself, Richards delivered the line that became part of Australian motorsport folklore:
"You're a pack of arseholes."
Richards was also dealing with the death of his close friend and former Formula One World Champion Denny Hulme, who had died earlier that day after suffering a heart attack during the race.
The controversy should not overshadow what Richards, Skaife and the Nissan team achieved.
They did not create the countback rule. They raced under it. They were leading at the point used to determine the official result, and they won the 1992 Bathurst 1000.
The Skyline GT-R may have been the enemy for many Ford and Holden supporters at the time, but its achievements are now part of Mount Panorama history. Richards and Skaife went back-to-back in 1991 and 1992, and the final chaotic afternoon of the Group A era ensured nobody would ever forget Godzilla.
This video revisits Brock's final Bathurst victory, the rise of the turbo Sierras, Grice, Johnson, Bowe, Longhurst, Percy, Richards, Skaife, and finally the storm, the red flag and one of the most famous podium presentations Australian motorsport has ever seen.
