In 2018 a book convinced me that AI would be humanity's final invention. This is why I no longer believe it. Not on faith, but on structure. AI will replace tasks. It is already reshaping jobs, and work that took twenty people can now be done by three. But the word that matters in the title is "fully". A machine will always need something outside itself to give it purpose and to judge its results, and the machine can never become that something. Five roads, all arriving at the same place: 1. Logic: Gödel and Turing showed a formal system can't stand outside itself, and every outside you build for a machine becomes another inside. 2. Structure: every node has a band of what can surprise it. A program is a form imposed on a node, so it has no band at all. 3. Mathematics: mathematics is what remains of reality once the answering is stripped out. That is why AI's competence map and the map of settled ground are the same map. 4. Learning: answering and learning are one event. The walker is never changed by the walk. 5. Evidence: it hallucinates and can't tell, it collapses when fed its own output, and it can be paused and resumed with nothing lost. Along the way: the three strongest objections ("it surprises me", "it emerges", "it might be conscious"), and what actually happens to our work.
