The History of Uranium Glass — The Fiesta Red the Bomb Took Uranium glass glows green under a black light, but its colour came from a black rock whose mines gave miners lung cancer and fed the bomb. The film follows how a colour for glass ended up locked in a cabinet under a federal licence. Franz Xaver Riedel coloured Bohemian glass with uranium from 1830, and George Gabriel Stokes coined the word fluorescence after studying its glow. Adolf Patera turned the Joachimsthal silver works into a uranium-yellow factory, while doctors counted lung deaths among the Schneeberg miners. Henri Becquerel found radioactivity in uranium salts, and the Curies took radium from the waste of the Joachimsthal factory. Edgar Sengier's Congo ore waited on Staten Island until the US Army bought it in 1942, and Fiesta red ended a year later. Prisoners at Jáchymov later mined uranium for a Soviet bomb, and American glassmakers returned to the colour with depleted uranium. ⏱ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 Fenton's Locked Uranium Cabinet 1:11 Riedel's Anna Yellow Glass 2:20 Stokes Names Fluorescence 3:50 Patera's Uranium-Yellow Factory 5:10 Schneeberg Miners' Mountain Sickness 6:39 Davidson's Primrose Pearline Glass 8:06 Becquerel Discovers Radioactivity 9:32 The Curies' Radium From Waste 11:16 Jáchymov's Radioactive Spa 12:31 Shinkolobwe Ore and Fiesta Red 13:36 Fission and the Einstein Letter 15:44 Sengier's Ore on Staten Island 18:04 Prisoners of the Jáchymov Mines 19:46 Depleted Uranium Glass Returns 21:46 Uranium Glass Radiation Doses 23:56 Uranium Glass Shard at Michigan State Subscribe for more hidden histories behind the objects you use every day. #history #documentary #UraniumGlass #ManhattanProject #Radioactivity
