Watch our coverage of BRICS day 1 here: • BRICS Joint Declaration में India को किन म...
The BRICS summit in New Delhi may be over, but the political and diplomatic questions around it are only beginning. Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, Masoud Pezeshkian and other BRICS leaders have left India — but what did each country actually gain from the summit?
In this video, we take a detailed look at the final day of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, the key points included in the final declaration, the priorities pushed by different member countries, and the political controversy that erupted in India over the summit's grand dinner menu.
What will you find in this video?
1. Key moments from the final day of the BRICS Summit
From Prime Minister Narendra Modi's interactions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to the final address at the summit, we look at some of the most important moments from September 13.
The video also looks at Modi and Putin's social-media moment around the viral “Wide Putin” meme, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's meeting with Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and the public display of warmth between Modi and Pezeshkian.
2. What did each BRICS member get from the summit?
The New Delhi Declaration reflects the priorities of several major BRICS members.
🇷🇺 Russia:
One of the biggest takeaways for Moscow was the absence of any direct reference to the Russia-Ukraine war in the New Delhi Declaration. The declaration also criticised economic and secondary sanctions imposed outside the UN framework.
🇨🇳 China:
The declaration criticised unilateral protectionist actions and addressed concerns around CBAM — the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, an issue particularly relevant to China's large industrial exports.
🇮🇷 Iran:
Iran secured strong language on the situation in Gaza, including calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, uninterrupted humanitarian assistance, opposition to forced displacement of Palestinians, and support for Palestinian statehood and a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders.
🇦🇪 🇸🇦 UAE and Saudi Arabia:
The declaration emphasised reducing regional tensions, resolving disputes through diplomacy and protecting global energy supply routes from disruption caused by military blockades or trade restrictions.
🇧🇷 🇿🇦 Brazil and South Africa:
Both countries pushed for reforms to global governance institutions. The declaration called for changes to quotas and voting power at institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, with greater representation for emerging and developing economies.
🇪🇬 🇪🇹 Egypt and Ethiopia:
The New Development Bank, often referred to as the BRICS Bank, committed to providing financing in local currencies for infrastructure and climate-related projects — potentially reducing exposure to fluctuations and risks associated with foreign currencies.
3. The BRICS dinner controversy in India
The summit also sparked a political debate over the grand dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for foreign leaders at Bharat Mandapam.
The menu was entirely vegetarian and featured dishes such as khandvi, khumb galouti kebab, paneer lababdar, dal panchmel, rajma rasela, millet pulao, Old Delhi-style fruit cream, jalebi and shahtoot phirni.
The vegetarian menu triggered criticism from opposition leaders, who accused the government of failing to reflect India's enormous culinary diversity.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi shared a photograph of chole bhature and argued that most Indians eat non-vegetarian food. Other opposition leaders, including Pawan Khera, Mahua Moitra and Priyanka Chaturvedi, also weighed in — though with different arguments and degrees of criticism.
The BJP's response came from Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who accused the opposition of politicising the food served to foreign guests and said the visitors enjoyed India's nutritious and diverse vegetarian cuisine.
