A valve can close in milliseconds. The water's momentum does not disappear—it becomes an elastic pressure wave that can cross a pipeline, reflect, and return with enough force to damage valves, supports, and the pipe itself. This visual engineering investigation explains water hammer from first principles. We use the Joukowsky relation to calculate an idealized 24-bar pressure rise, follow reflections through a 500-meter pipeline, reconstruct the 1996 Oconee Unit 2 drain-line rupture documented by the U.S. NRC, and examine water-hammer loads in the Mars Polar Lander and Ares I propulsion programs. You’ll see why a pressure wave can travel hundreds of times faster than the water itself, how vapor or gas pockets create secondary impacts, and why controlled valve timing, non-slam check valves, proper venting, surge vessels, relief paths, transient analysis, and representative testing must be designed as one system.
