Helcaraxë - Anar ar Isil (album, 2026) dark medieval dungeon synth

For my final feature of DS Sunday this week, I am honoured to present a new project from Gravfrost. Joining his eponymous project of abyssal dungeon doom, and the dark winter ambient of Isbre comes Helcaraxë; a Tolkien-themed entity of dark, majestic, medieval dungeon synth. Anar ar Isil follows the exodus of the Noldor elves following the harrowing events of The First Kinslaying, the arduous crossing of The Helcaraxë, the subsequent decimation of Beleriand and the first risings of the moon and sun above Middle Earth. Though there is the haunting presence of his signature raw ominous drone among its foundations, Helcaraxë is characterised by ornate, sweeping, glittering melodies and cinematic sonic details. You can see the fluttering banners and sun glinting off spires as horns blast in regal salute. Passages of unearthly, otherworldy sounds mark mystic musings and dramatic events. These are grand vistas of arcane fantasy depicting the weathered tales of Tolkien’s legendarium. An impressive expansion of his range of sounds and styles, Gravfrost has produced an album that once again channels the true essences of dungeon synth and fantasy music, in a captivating, transportive experience of an album that will resonate deeply with anyone interested in the genre; complemented further by a great logo from Thaumaturge Artworks, and album art by EF.
