Six Minutes: Grade 5 Math, Part 21: Axes, Origin, Coordinates and Points Tell Stories: Building the coordinate system (5.G.1); then Graph and Read First-Quadrant Points Two perpendicular number lines crossing at the origin turn the plane into a grid of addresses. Every point gets an ordered pair, and the order of the two numbers matters. Then: This episode uses the first-quadrant coordinate plane from 5.G.1 to graph real situations, like a rain gauge filling at a steady rate. Students plot ordered pairs, read coordinate values in context, and check their graphs with a table and a rule. A point starts at the origin, moves right 5 and up 3. What ordered pair names it? Answer: (5, 3) — check by walking left 5 and down 3 to return to the origin. 2. Do (1, 6) and (6, 1) name the same point? Answer: No. (1, 6) is right 1 and up 6; (6, 1) is right 6 and up 1. Different orders give different points. 3. A bike rider travels 5 miles every hour, starting at mile 0. Graph the points for 1, 2, and 3 hours, then tell what the point (3, 15) means. Answer: points (1, 5), (2, 10), (3, 15); (3, 15) means after 3 hours the rider has gone 15 miles. 4. A candle burns down 3 centimeters every hour from a starting height of 12 centimeters. Graph the height after 1, 2, and 3 hours and check with a rule. Answer: points (1, 9), (2, 6), (3, 3); rule height = 12 - 3 × hours gives 9, 6, 3, so the graph checks out.
