Beyond the Pages
Episode 30: Negative Thinking and Mental Health – Breaking the Cycle of Stress & Anxiety
Welcome to Beyond the Pages, a podcast that transforms meaningful books into engaging, easy-to-understand conversations.
This episode is based on Chapter 30 of the book:
Health and Well-Being: Correlation Between WHO Guidelines and Quranic Teachings
written by Dr. Aziz Ahmed Quadri, Consultant Psychiatrist with nearly five decades of clinical experience in mental health, psychological well-being, addiction medicine, and community healthcare.
What is this episode about?
Our minds constantly generate thoughts—but not every thought is true, helpful, or healthy.
Negative thinking patterns such as excessive worrying, catastrophizing, rumination, self-criticism, and hopelessness can gradually affect emotional well-being, relationships, physical health, and overall quality of life. Left unchecked, these patterns may increase the risk of anxiety, depression, chronic stress, and emotional exhaustion.
Fortunately, modern psychology has shown that unhealthy thinking habits can be recognized and changed. Through evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and stress management techniques, individuals can learn to challenge distorted thoughts, develop healthier perspectives, and build emotional resilience.
In this episode, we explore the relationship between negative thinking, mental health, emotional resilience, and psychological well-being, highlighting how changing our thought patterns can transform the way we experience life.
The discussion examines rumination, catastrophizing, cognitive distortions, self-doubt, chronic stress, anxiety, depression, mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), emotional regulation, gratitude, resilience, and WHO recommendations for reducing the harmful effects of negative thinking.
The episode also explores the Quranic perspective on hope, patience, gratitude, and trusting Allah during difficult times, emphasizing that despair should never define our lives and that hope, perseverance, and gratitude strengthen emotional well-being.
The Quran reminds us:
“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.’” — Surah Az-Zumar (39:53)
It also teaches:
“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153)
And encourages gratitude by reminding us:
“And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them.” — Surah Ibrahim (14:34)
Together, these perspectives remind us that negative thoughts do not have to control our lives. By replacing despair with hope, distorted thinking with balanced thinking, and fear with resilience, we can protect our mental health and build a healthier, more meaningful future.
