Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) and Alexander Nishibun (b. 1987) Es ist ein Ros entsprugen Aus einer Wurzel zart Als uns die Alten sungen Aus Jesse kam die Art Und hat ein Blümlein bracht Mitten im kalten Winter Wohl zu der hallben Nacht. Das Röslein, daß ich meine, davon Jesaias sagt, hat uns gebracht alleine Marie, die reine Magd. Aus Gottes ew’gem Rat hat sie ein Kind geboren welches uns selig macht. TRANSLATION Lo, how a rose e’er blooming From tender stem hath sprung! Of Jesse’s lineage coming, As men of old have sung. It came, a flow’ret bright, Amid the cold of winter, When half-spent was the night. The rose that I mean, of which Isaiah speaks, was brought to us only by Mary, the pure maid.
