What happens to your consciousness the exact instant you die?| Michio Kaku Responds

What happens to your consciousness the exact instant you die? It is the most personal question in all of science — and physicist Michio Kaku gives the most honest answer you will hear anywhere. In this video, we go inside the dying brain, second by second: what happens when the heart stops, how long the brain keeps firing, and whether there even is an "exact instant" of death. Drawing on cutting-edge neuroscience, Kaku walks through the brain's shutdown sequence — the slowing EEG, the mysterious gamma surge detected in dying brains, the persistence of the brainstem, and the strange Lazarus phenomenon. We examine near-death experiences with full scientific honesty: the tunnel of light, out-of-body sensations, and life reviews — what survivors report, and what each feature maps to in the brain. We also confront the hard limits: clinical death versus biological death, why different countries define death differently, and the famous AWARE study's sobering null result. No hype, no miracle claims, no mockery — just the real science of the final second of consciousness, and Kaku's own remarkable perspective on what it means. Watch to the end: the conclusion will change how you think about your own last moment. 🔔 Subscribe for more science videos on consciousness, death, the brain, and the universe's deepest mysteries.
