How the Hands Really Work in the Golf Swing One of the biggest breakthroughs I’ve had as both a player and instructor is understanding what the hands are actually supposed to do in the golf swing. The trail hand is the thrower, while the lead hand acts more like a chopper. When your grip is correct and your fundamentals are solid, you don’t have to force a release. The club naturally releases itself because of how your hands are designed to work. This all starts in the takeaway. As you hinge the wrists correctly going back, you’re setting up a dynamic impact position before the downswing even begins. From there, the trail hand can simply throw the clubhead, the lead hand supports and controls the motion, and the club delivers itself with speed and consistency. I’ve watched this concept make golf dramatically easier for so many students. Better contact, more effortless speed, improved consistency, and a swing that feels much more athletic instead of forced.
