For business and community leaders, some of the most important decisions have to be made years before the need becomes urgent. How do you prepare people, resources, and finances for challenges you can already see coming? In this episode, Michael K. Warne, AAMS®, and Tracy Powell-Warne speak with Chris Angermuller, Fire Chief at Windsor Severance Fire Rescue, about readiness, leadership, public trust, and long-term planning. Chris shares how his fire service career began, how mentors shaped his leadership style, and why training and physical preparation matter before an emergency occurs. He also explains how data guides future stations, staffing, equipment purchases, and financial planning in a rapidly growing community. Together, they explore: • How preparation, physical fitness, equipment checks, and continual training support emergency response readiness • How data helps fire districts anticipate future stations, staffing, equipment, and community service demands • Why transparency and clear communication help public leaders build trust around long-term community investments • How compassionate leadership gives people room to make mistakes, learn, and continue developing professionally • Why family, education, mentorship, and preparation for future roles have shaped Chris’s leadership philosophy • And more! His career in the fire service began as a teenager through the Overland Park Fire Department Explorer Program, followed by seven years as a volunteer firefighter before moving into a full-time role. Over the course of his career, Chris has continued his education from an associate degree through a doctorate in public administration. His leadership approach is grounded in preparation, transparency, compassion, mentorship, and long-term planning, with a strong belief that family should come before the job and that leaders should help people learn from mistakes rather than tear them down.
