A correct dimension on a handwheel cannot repair a moving workpiece, a dirty locating face or a tilted spindle. Before cutting, establish a chain from the machine geometry through the fixture and work datum to the actual cutting edge. Each connection answers a different question: where is the part located, how is it supported, what resists cutting force, and where will the tool travel? This lesson uses a milling and drilling study to connect those questions. A calculation supports the setup only when its physical reference and verification method are clear.
Moving diagrams, worked examples and separate practice answers for Machinist learners.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
• Select and secure an appropriate milling workholding arrangement with distinct location, support and restraint.
• Distinguish machine geometry from accessory alignment and evaluate an indicator-based alignment study.
• Install and remove appropriate tooling, establish work datums and interpret probe-radius offsets.
• Evaluate an original mill-drilling setup for coordinates, depth, clearance and evidence needed before operation.
