Greece Motorcycle Adventure (Pt9): The Ultimate Halkidiki Coastal Run. Gateway to Paradise.
Episode 9 of 12
Welcome to Episode 9 of a 12-part coastal saga with me and the Iron Pony!
Embarking on a motorcycle ride along the Greek coastline with a GPS as an adversary turns a simple route into an unpredictable adventure. Starting from Epanomi, a rural hub situated between the Thermaic Gulf and the Aegean Sea with Mount Olympus on the horizon, the route traces the coast toward the gateway of Halkidiki, concluding in Nea Moudania and Sozopoli.
Halkidiki is famed for its vast coastline, pine forests meeting crystal-clear waters, and rolling hills that mirror the diverse landscapes of the Greek islands. Rising from its easternmost peninsula is Mount Athos, a sacred monastic state with a rich history dating back over a thousand years, home to twenty historic Eastern Orthodox monasteries.
Here’s the plan: get from Epanomi to Nea Moudania while hugging the coastline as closely as humanly possible. Sounds simple, right? Wrong. Modern GPS algorithms are programmed to take you on the fastest, most efficient route. I, on the other hand, am riding the Iron Pony, and efficiency is strictly banned on this journey.
Watch as my trusty digital navigator repeatedly begs me to take the highway while I deliberately turn down quiet backstreets, twisty coastal roads, one-way alleys, and questionable paths just to keep the sea in sight. Starting from the rural charm of Epanomi, nestled right between the Thermaic Gulf and the Aegean with Mount Olympus keeping watch in the distance, we set off on a mission guided purely by instinct, stubbornness, and a quick glance at the map while moving.
Expect sudden terrain changes, gorgeous beach views, wrong turns, right turns, and plenty of friendly arguments with an automated voice telling me to make a U-turn. Whether you’re a fellow rider looking for alternative coastal routes or just here to see if the Iron Pony makes it to the gateway in one piece, suit up and enjoy the ride!
