He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. WHO DO PEOPLE SAY THAT I AM? 1. Jesus asked his disciples about who people thought he was… Matthew 16:13. 2. People were all over the place as to Jesus’ identity… Matthew 16:14-15. 3. If Jesus wasn’t fully divine and fully human he couldn’t have atoned for sin… Hebrews 2:17. 4. When you understand who Christ truly is… no one else will do… Colossians 1:15-20. HE IS THE IMAGE OF THE INVISIBLE GOD 1. Jesus said if you have seen me you have seen the Father… John 14:8-9. 2. Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God… Philippians 2:4-7; Hebrews 1:3. 3. Jesus was with God in the beginning, and is himself God… John 1:1. 4. Jesus is also the firstborn of all creation… Colossians 1:15; Psalm 89:27. HE IS THE CREATOR OF ALL THINGS 1. All things were made through Jesus and for him… Colossians 1:16; John 1:1-4. 2. Everything exists for the glory of God… Romans 11:36; Revelation 4:11. 3. God will not share his glory… Isaiah 42:8. 4. Everything exists for the glory of Jesus! HE IS BEFORE ALL THINGS AND IN HIM ALL THINGS HOLD TOGETHER 1. This speaks to Christ's eternal and self-existent nature… Colossians 1:17; Exodus 3:14; John 8:58. 2. Trusting in CHRIST ALONE a core tenant of the Protestant Reformation. 3. When you trust in CHRIST ALONE… you find lasting rest from your works… Matthew 11:28-30; Romans 4:5. 4. When Jesus’s work was done he said , “It is finished”... John 19:30. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION 1. What dangers exist when we diminish the person of Christ? 2. What do you find most compelling in our passage today? 3.
