How Miami's Old Money Built a City of Mansions and Then Lost It All in a Single Year: Coral Gables

The last people to see Coral Gables the way George Merrick built it saw it by lamplight, on the night of September 17th, 1926. The city was five years old and nearly finished — wide boulevards under Mediterranean arches, fountains in the plazas, the Biltmore tower rising over a golf course that had been pine scrub a few seasons before. By most accounts it was the most beautiful planned city in America. Everyone remembers the hurricane that came ashore the next morning as the day the dream died.
