"THE GREENHOUSE HOURS" (1977 Analog Master Tape Transfer) Artist: The Autumnal Collective Recorded: October 1977, Sussex Victorian Solarium, England Source: Studer A80 1/4" Master Tape / 15 IPS (Archive Reel: A80-1977) In October 1977, during an unseasonably cold Sussex autumn, an informal collective of British session musicians bypassed commercial London studios to stage a four-day recording retreat inside a derelict, 19th-century Victorian conservatory. Fractured glass panels, iron trusses entwined with wild ivy, and pools of rainwater collecting on cracked mosaic tiles served as the physical and acoustic chamber for this unreleased pastoral space-rock suite. Rather than dampening the natural ambience, ambient ribbon and condenser microphones were positioned beneath the iron dome to integrate the natural reverb of falling rain, shifting winds, and structural creaks directly into the stereo field. Captured live to tape on a portable Studer A80 deck, the session trades traditional verse-chorus formulas for sprawling narrative poetry followed by extended, emotive Stratocaster guitar passages, cascading Fender Rhodes arpeggios, and sweeping Mellotron tape banks. Preserved in an archival storage case for nearly five decades, this audio transfer is presented raw from the original magnetic master reels with zero digital brickwall limiting, phase correction, or quantization.
