Part of Uzbekistan sits entirely inside Kyrgyzstan, and about 99% of its people are Tajik, by commonly cited figures. This animated map explainer shows how Soviet national delimitation (1924-36) drew the borders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, why the Fergana Valley became the tightest knot on the map, and what happened when internal Soviet lines turned into international borders in 1991. We test the popular claim that 'Stalin drew the borders' against three questions: who drew the lines, why one valley got tangled, and what changed when the Soviet Union dissolved. Along the way: the enclaves of Sokh, Shakhimardan and Vorukh, the Toktogul Dam, why Uzbekistan is doubly landlocked, and the recent Kyrgyz-Uzbek (2022) and Kyrgyz-Tajik (2025) border treaties.
