Costa Maya cruise port guide — the day is decided before you leave the pier. Stay in the port complex, or go out to Maya ruins in the jungle, a lagoon with seven colors of water, or the beach village of Mahahual? This guide covers all three, and which one fits your ship's hours.
Ships tie up alongside a long four-berth pier. Settle three things: ruins, lagoon or beach; DIY or tour (Mahahual is an easy taxi, the ruins and lagoon are not); and how many hours your ship is in port.
🚢 Getting Around
The walk down the pier takes about ten minutes, and a small open tram often runs along it. The exit winds through the port shopping complex to the taxi rank outside the gate. A taxi to Mahahual, about two miles away, runs about five dollars a person each way. There is no Uber. Chacchoben is about an hour inland and Bacalar is an hour or more each way, so those are tour or private-driver trips. As a rough guide: eight hours or more in port for Bacalar, six or seven for Chacchoben, less than that and stay with Mahahual.
🏙️ Top Highlights
Chacchoben, the place of the red corn, is a jungle Maya city with stone temples you can walk among but not climb. Its few inscriptions are worn almost smooth, so nobody knows its real name; a local farmer came across it in 1942. Bacalar is a freshwater lagoon about 26 miles long whose shallows hold one of the world's largest freshwater stretches of stromatolites, a life form whose kind goes back about 3.5 billion years. Float the current at Los Rápidos and see the old pirate fort of San Felipe. Mahahual has a seafront boardwalk, beach clubs and a calm reef-sheltered sea.
🍴 Local Food & Culture
Try tikin xic, a whole fish in red achiote and sour orange cooked in banana leaf over coals, or cochinita pibil. Ceviche is fresh and generous, and you may find Belize-style coconut rice and beans. For something sweet, a marquesita: a crisp rolled wafer filled with cheese.
🎯 Smart Cruise Tips
Pick your beach before you reach the taxi rank and agree the fare, because some drivers try to redirect passengers to pricier spots. Ask whether prices are in pesos or dollars, since both use the same sign. Bacalar's fort is closed on Mondays and boats are often kept off the lagoon on Wednesdays outside the busy season. Quintana Roo does not change its clocks, so go by ship time.
❓ COMMON QUESTIONS
How far is Mahahual from the Costa Maya cruise port? About two miles. A taxi costs about five dollars a person each way and takes five to ten minutes. Walking is not recommended in the heat.
Can you do Chacchoben ruins on a Costa Maya cruise stop? Yes. It is about an hour each way, with around an hour and a half on site. Go in the morning, as the site closes in the afternoon.
Is Bacalar worth it from Costa Maya? If your ship is in port for eight hours or more, yes. The lagoon of seven colors, the stromatolites and Los Rápidos make a memorable day, but it is well over an hour each way.
Why is Chacchoben called the place of the red corn? It is a modern Maya name. The site's few carved inscriptions are too worn to read, so its original name is lost.
Costa Maya is one of those places where timing, distance, and layout can make the day feel rushed. That's why so many visitors choose local tours — they're good value, smaller groups, and they simplify the timing so you get more done with less stress. Our recommended options are linked at the top.
