Teenagers had plenty to complain about in 1958, and Eddie Cochran gave them the perfect record for it. Eddie Cochran released “Summertime Blues” in 1958, turning teenage frustration over work, money, parents, and authority into one of the defining records of early American rock and roll. Written by Cochran and his manager Jerry Capehart, the song reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Cochran’s best-known American hit. Its tough guitar sound, driving rhythm, and humorous spoken responses gave the record an edge that stood apart from much of the pop music surrounding it. “Summertime Blues” also proved remarkably influential, later inspiring recordings by The Who, Blue Cheer, and many other rock artists. For Richie and the High Street Rockers, the song represents the harder-driving side of 1950s rock and roll and rockabilly, when young performers like Eddie Cochran were helping define what guitar-driven American rock music could become.
