This is The History Of Northwest Rock Volume III, released in 1980 on The Great Northwest Music Company (GNW-4009). This is a mono compilation collecting some seriously obscure Pacific Northwest rock from the 1960s. Volume III digs deeper than the obvious Northwest hits. The Sonics and Kingsmen are here, but much of the fun is in bands like The Springfield Rifle, The Bumps, The Live Five, The Magic Fern, The Bards, London Taxi, and Brave New World. The music covers a pretty wide stretch of the Northwest sound, from raw garage and R&B into folk rock and psychedelia. By the second side especially, you can hear how quickly the region was moving from the garage sound of the mid-60s into the stranger psychedelic underground that followed. For me, compilations like this are also a great roadmap for collecting Northwest 45s.
