One line you have heard at nearly every wedding - 'the two will become one flesh' - and Paul says out loud what it was always about: 'I am speaking about Christ and the church.' Here is how you see that type clearly - walk the square.
In this Walk the Square, Professor Westminster takes a single Old Testament type - the one-flesh marriage God instituted in Eden (Genesis 2:24) - and walks all four corners of Edmund Clowney's square: start with the text in its own world (bottom-left), up the left to the truth it taught Israel, that God Himself joins husband and wife in a covenant bond woven into creation (top-left), across the top to its fulfillment in Christ the Bridegroom and His bride the church (top-right), and down the right to what it means for you (bottom-right). Only then, with every side walked, do we draw the diagonal - the type itself, now standing in full view: the marriage God set in the garden really did point forward to His Son. And note how Paul reads it - he discloses a designed-in meaning without cancelling the literal marriage (5:33); the mystery unveils the pattern, it does not replace it.

THE THREAD
Here the thread is a real shared word, carried whole across the testaments: Paul quotes Genesis 2:24 verbatim - the Hebrew 'one flesh' (basar echad) comes across into Greek as sarx mia - and then he adds his own interpretive key, mysterion, a mystery now disclosed. The very phrase that founded marriage in Eden is the phrase Paul lifts to name the union of Christ and His church.
The method here is Edmund Clowney's, refined by Vern Poythress.
