Golfers this is just a look at what has happened to the golf industry over the past 30/35 years. It use to be a really neat job to be the HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL. The head pro owned the pro shop merchandise, he owned the golf carts, he owned the revenue for the driving range. Golf was his business and everyone knew that the pro shop was were you went for advice. The head pro was respected as man a young man went into the golf business because of what they grew up knowing about their own head pro. ------ Those days are dead, dead, dead. The head pro is no more than a hired employee for some golf course management company. Golf as a career is not what it use to be. What killed it was when the discount stores started getting into the golf industry. The greed behind the club manufacturers to boost sales lead to the total demise of the Green Grass account at pro shop everywhere. The cheapest equipment and ball are no longer available at golf shops. The only thing that is really still there is the shirts with the Golf Course Logo on them that men want. Maybe a big Country Clubs the Head Pro still makes a living but the small courses and City Municipalities have taken the business of golf out of the Head Professionals hands entirely. And that is a real shame. I doubt that most who want to be in the Golf Business, those who have gone through the PGA Apprenticeship who learned the business of golf through business schools offered through the PGA are disappointed when it is all said and done. The fulfill all the obligations to be a head pro and wind up working at a PGA Tour Super Store or a Dick Sporting goods and are not even on a golf course at all. Just this week Dick Sporting Goods just fired all PGA personal within all of their stores. The only word coming down form the PGA about this was: "I'm sincerely disappointed that the careers of so many PGA professionals have been hurt today," said PGA of America president Ted Bishop. Right Teddy, I'm sure the career goal for a Class A PGA Professional after going through all the do commit to in getting the necessary business knowledge for running a golf pro shop that they really wanted to come off of a golf course to work for Dick Sporting Good as a PGA Golf career. They do not need to PGA of America to go to work for Dick Sporting goods that's for damn sure.
