Adoption, in the India I remember, was never really about blood. In our joint families, cousins and siblings grew up under the same roof, ate from the same kitchen, fought the same battles and received the same love. There was rarely a need to ask, “Is this child yours?” Because family was not defined by biology. It was defined by belonging. Perhaps that is what made adoption feel so natural in those homes. Love was the bigger language than blood.
