Every MotoGP rider hangs off the bike and drags a knee through the corner. Kenny Roberts, the man most people credit with that style, copied it from a rider almost nobody remembers.

This is the story of Jarno Saarinen, the Finnish engineering student and ice-racing champion who brought the hang-off style to Grand Prix racing, won the Daytona 200 on an undersized 350, and led both the 250cc and 500cc world championships in 1973 before he was killed in the worst crash Grand Prix racing has ever seen at Monza. It covers the riding style he pioneered, the 1973 season that nearly made him unstoppable, the Monza disaster and the man wrongly blamed for it, the cover-up that lasted until 1993, and why Formula 1 driver Jarno Trulli was named after him.
