Suit Up and Get in the Game

What does it truly mean to “suit up and get in the game” as a follower of Jesus? In this encouraging message, we look at the powerful example of the early church in Acts and discover how God calls ordinary believers to step forward, serve faithfully, and make a difference in His kingdom. As the church grew rapidly, thousands of new believers came together. With that growth came real needs, difficult challenges, and people who were being overlooked. Acts 6 shows how the apostles responded by calling the church to select seven respected, Spirit-filled, and wise servants who could care for those needs while the apostles remained devoted to prayer and teaching God’s Word. This moment gives us a biblical picture of faithful service and helps us understand the heart behind the role of a deacon. In this service, we also recognize Keith and Cindy Zimmerman as they answer God’s call to serve as deacons. Their willingness reminds us that ministry is not only about holding a position—it is about having a servant’s heart, noticing what needs to be done, caring for people, and using the gifts God has given us for His glory. But this message is not only for deacons or church leaders. The call to serve belongs to every believer. The church was never meant to be a stadium where a few people participate while everyone else watches from the stands. The church is the body of Christ, and every part has a purpose. God has given each person gifts, opportunities, experiences, and people they can reach. Your assignment may be to pray faithfully, encourage someone who is hurting, welcome a visitor, teach a child, prepare a meal, give generously, visit someone who is lonely, help meet a practical need, serve behind the scenes, or share the hope of Jesus with a neighbor. You do not have to do everything—but every one of us can do something. God is not looking for perfect people. He is looking for willing people—people full of faith, guided by the Holy Spirit, and ready to serve. When each person carries out their assignment, needs are met, burdens are shared, the gospel moves forward, and the church grows stronger. The whistle has blown. The need is before us. The mission is clear. Will you remain in the stands, or will you suit up and get in the game?
