In 1987, two engines hit the road on opposite sides of the world, each ready to change trucking forever. In America, Detroit Diesel unveiled the Series 60, trading mechanical guts for a digital brain. It quickly became the predictable, dependable king of the asphalt, measuring success in saved fuel and reduced downtime.
But 4,000 miles away, a 16.12-liter Swedish behemoth was being installed in the Volvo F16. This engine, the TD162, didn't care about diagnostics; it cared about dragging 60-ton logging trains up mountainsides and hauling triple road trains across the scorched Australian outback.
It was a clash of engineering titans: the smart, electronic champion vs. the rugged, pure-muscle giant. While the Series 60 stacked up the miles, the TD162 stacked up the torque. The TD162 was stronger, tougher, and arguably the more incredible machine of the era... so why did the U.S. market completely look the other way?
Join us as we uncover the true story of the biggest engine America never ran, and the cultural and logistical reasons it was denied its moment in the spotlight. #ironhaul #carengines #TD162
