Account 2 — A ranger alone in a one-room station a mile below that shelter watched a lantern come up the trail with nothing casting a shadow. A man in a wool uniform retired before she was born stood at her window and read the shelf where the registers are kept. When she told him the station was closed, he said: you're not on the list tonight. Then he came to the door and read names out loud for forty minutes, and somewhere in the fifties he read hers. Account 3 — A district ranger with twenty-two years drove up to that shelter to take the register off the table. On the last written page was a line with the time filled in, a date four days ahead, and the name column blank. He put his hand on the page. The paper moved under his palm.
