INDIRECT RIPOSTE with the Cut
“Combative WHY”: To avoid a fast parry by your opponent, feint a direct riposte, deceive his defensive parry and riposte to the created opening.
“DROP STICK” PARRY “Combative WHY”:
REDIRECTION PARRY (intercept blade downward to deflect & redirect the force)
Note: must utilize forward leg replacement to avoid deflected blade.
DROP STICK DEFLECTION DRILL: Drop stick parries (against attacks aimed below waist = deflect downward from above with forward leg replacement)
DEFENSIVE & DISTANCE Admonition: “Less is more,” is especially true when working with a sword, especially a heavy sword.
Slow down when learning and be specific to imprint precise muscle memory.
Speed comes from moving smaller, doing less and waiting until the last possible instant before committing to a parry. Make your opponent commit to his final attack before committing to your defense.
ABANICO or “fan” strikes with both edge and flat of blade
“Combative WHY”: Deflect the incoming attack as you climb from blade to arm to face with pivoting blade reversals. Confuse the opponent by rapid and unpredictable reversals of direction of blade strikes while increasing the opportunities for multiple hits. Can also enter distance with series of progressive strikes. (“de-fanging the snake”)
Patterns: horizontal, diagonal inside, diagonal outside, vertical
