The architect was Paul Hayden Kirk, the defining voice of Northwest Modernism and AIA Seattle Medalist. Kirk blended the precise geometry of Mies van der Rohe with the wood-building traditions of Japan and Scandinavia, creating a style the University of Washington called "a quality unsurpassed by any other in the nation in its time." Kirk's work was published in over 60 national publications; his portfolio includes the UW Faculty Club, the Magnolia Branch Seattle Public Library, and a pivotal role in the preservation of Pike Place Market. The floor-to-ceiling glass wall doesn't face the water by accident. Christiansen was a lifelong mountaineer who summitted the 100 highest peaks of the Olympic Mountains.
