Thinking about becoming a South Carolina Notary Public or already commissioned and want a practical reference for South Carolina notary law? In this video, I walk through the Enhanced South Carolina Notary Handbook, an unofficial plain-English study and professional reference guide built around S.C. Code Title 26, Chapter 1. 📘 GET THE SOUTH CAROLINA NOTARY HANDBOOK — $9.97: https://legaldocprepnotary.com/south-... What’s Included? ✓ South Carolina notary law in plain English ✓ 10-year commission rules ✓ Governor appointment through the Secretary of State ✓ $25 application fee overview ✓ No surety bond requirement ✓ Required ink stamp ✓ Fee-posting rules ✓ Acknowledgments ✓ Representative acknowledgments ✓ Jurats ✓ Signature witnessing ✓ Copy certification ✓ IPEN overview ✓ Journal guidance ✓ Printable invoice ✓ 30-day marketing quick-start ✓ Plain-English glossary South Carolina Has a 10-Year Commission One of the biggest things that makes South Carolina different is the length of the commission. The handbook states that South Carolina notaries are appointed by the Governor, with the commission issued through the Secretary of State, for a 10-year term That gives the state one of the longest notary commission terms in the country. No Bond Required South Carolina does not require a surety bond. The landing page also notes a $25 application fee and a legislator-endorsement requirement as part of the commissioning process. Required Stamp South Carolina requires an ink stamp or seal for paper notarizations. The handbook says the stamp should show the notary’s name plus: “Notary Public” “State of South Carolina” Fee Posting Rule South Carolina handles notary fees a little differently than states with a simple per-act statutory cap. If you charge for notarial acts, the guide explains that your fee schedule must be posted conspicuously in your place of business, and fees should be disclosed in advance. Travel may be handled separately when agreed upon beforehand. Is a Journal Required? A journal is not required by law, but the handbook says it is strongly recommended by the Secretary of State. The guide recommends using a permanently bound journal and includes journal pages for reference and practice. IPEN vs. RON This is another important South Carolina distinction. The landing page states that South Carolina currently allows In-Person Electronic Notarization — IPEN, but not full Remote Online Notarization. With IPEN, the document may be signed and notarized electronically, but the signer still must be physically present with the notary. That means: Electronic does NOT automatically mean remote.
