⛰️Ancient Baijnath Shiv Temple, Himachal Pradesh 🕉️ | 800+ Years of History Explore the ancient Baijnath Shiv Temple in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, a sacred temple dedicated to Lord Shiva as Vaidyanatha, meaning “Lord of Physicians.” The present temple was built in 1204 AD by two local merchants, Ahuka and Manyuka, who were devoted followers of Lord Shiva. Inscriptions on the temple walls mention that a Shiva shrine already existed at this site before the present structure was built. The temple is a beautiful example of medieval Nagara-style architecture, with intricate stone carvings and sculptures that reflect the craftsmanship of more than 800 years ago. According to local tradition, the temple is also connected with the legendary story of Ravana and Lord Shiva. Ravana’s intense devotion to Shiva is believed to be connected with the establishment of the sacred Shiva lingam at this place. This tradition is also associated with the fact that Dussehra is not traditionally celebrated here. The temple was renovated several times over the centuries, including during the reign of Katoch king Sansara Chandra II, and was later damaged in the 1905 Kangra earthquake before being restored.
