Few personal adornments are as unique and stylish as a turban (“dastaar”). High-fashion stylish garments are created by designers, promoted by trendsetters and then produced in factories for us to add to our personal wardrobe style. The turban, on the other hand, is a simple length of cloth, yet transforms into a unique style by the hands of each individual who wears it. From an early age a Sikh child practices tying a turban. This process of learning how to handle several yards of fabric and convert it into a beautiful crown imbues the wearer with confidence. This video may answer many of your questions about the “dastaar”. Why is the turban so important for the Sikhs? What is the significance of the colors of a turban? Is there a correct age to begin wearing one? How long does it take to tie a turban? Does wearing a turban make you feel different? How? Are there limits to who can wear a turban? In fact the elegant turban is a symbol of personal style not only for a Sikh, but for anyone who chooses to wear one. The dastaar—a gift from the Sikh gurus—is an expression of individuality and gives the wearer a sense of confidence. Among the Sikhs, the dastaar is an article of faith that represents equality, honor, self-respect, courage, spirituality and piety. The Khalsa Sikh men and women, who keep the 5 Ks, wear the turban to cover their long, uncut hair (mesh). The Sikhs regard to dastaar as an important part oft he unique Sikh identity. After the ninth Sikh Guru, Tegh Bahadur, was sentenced to death by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, created the Khalsa and gave five articles of faith, one of which is unshorn hair which the dastaar covers. Anyone wearing a turban sends out a message to the world —“I value myself".  Thanks to our hardworking team, who have weathered difficult times to get these amazing videos onto our channel, sikhseverywhere.
